Meeting at Nationwide Plaza 1 Heritage Room (Map)

Business Meeting

Paul Schulz (Nationwide) opened the meeting and gave the welcome from Nationwide. Thank you, Nationwide. It was an excellent environment for our meeting.

Paul then introduced our president, John Cochran (Nationwide). John discussed putting the minutes on the WWW. Our address is http://ourworld.compuserve.com/homepages/schulzp/codug.htm.

Many of our members have access to the WWW, but we will still mail to you unless you tell us that you prefer being updated through use of the WWW.

We set our meeting dates for 1997: January 22, June 11, and September 24. If you want IDUG news, contact Aleshia Foster at (312) 644-6610, ext 3485 or on the internet at afoster@sba.com. IDUG, of course, has a web page at http://www.idug.org/.

Feature Presentation

Our presentation was on Stored Procedures given by Ed Woods of Candle. Ed discussed the biggest need for stored procedures as being the evolution of client/server.

DB2 and WWW

Paul Schulz gave a presentation on the CODUG web site. He also gave an overview of how to create home pages and code HTML. Then Phyllis went over foils about how DB2 WWW Connection fits into the picture.

What's new from IBM

DB2
-Phyllis gave us an overview of What's New. She mentioned a couple of bullets on the new 4.2 but we will probably cover it in depth in January. The biggest enhancements are ODBC capability, TCP/IP connectivity, Various DRDA improvements, Utility performance enhancements, and Multiple strored procedure address spaces.
-DB2 v4.1 users should be aware of some hiper PTFs concerning Type 2 indexes and outer join. It would be best to get to PUT level 9609 if possible. At least check the PUT buckets.
Other Software
-She pointed out that MQSeries (for asynchronous communication among multiple platforms and protocols) has seen wide acceptance.
-Data Propagator has improvements and can now handle Oracle synchronization.
-Visual Warehouse has many performance improvements.
-DB2WWW Connection is now available on all platforms (MVS, OS/2, NT, etc). Note that WWW connection requires a WWW server on the same platform as the WWW connection will be running on. IBM is offering free WWW servers at the http://www.software.ibm.com/download/ site.
-Phyllis has diskettes for demos of the DB2 Administration Tool and DB2 Estimator. The Estimator is also available for download via the WWW.
-Phyllis also has a diskette of samples on calling Stored Procedures in all languages including REXX.
Hardware
-CMOS processors are now available with enough performance to be considered for many shops that were too big for them in the past.

Roundtable

The roundtable went into covered some questions on the DB2 WWW connection and HTML coding.
