Meeting at Nationwide Plaza 1 Heritage Room (Map)

Business Meeting

The meeting was held in the Heritage room on the walkway between Nationwide Plaza I and Nationwide Plaza 3. Thank you, Nationwide, for hosting the meeting again.

Paul Schulz (Nationwide) opened the meeting and introduced John Cochran, our President. (Nationwide) John discussed our activities in the last year. He thanked Paul for being our Vice President. Paul would like to retire, as would our treasurer, Mike McClelland. Therefore, we will hold an election at our June meeting. Please let either John or Phyllis know if you are interested in either position. Mike will be willing to keep the office until September to help in the transition. Thank you, Paul for all your work in helping arrange our meetings and our Web site! You have done a nice job!. And Mike, thank you for all the time setting up our various combined user group and Client Server shows. These shows take a lot of work. That is why we discussed whether the group felt the shows were valuable. Evidently most people did. Therefore, since we haven't gotten a lot of volunteers to work on such an event, John and Phyllis will investigate whether we can get a Tools Fair or other organizer to help arrange such an event, as long as we have input on what kinds of speakers and vendors we would like to see.

John also asked if we could have 2 or 3 people who might volunteer to do one individual task, such as help Everest keep the mailing list updated. If you would be willing to help on a small task, please let John know. We have about 180 members, so we have need of a little help now and then. Also, some of the little tasks would give you an opportunity to meet guest speakers or make other interesting contacts.

June 11 is our next meeting., which will be held in the same Heritage Room.

Since Mike McClelland was unable to attend, we don't have an official Treasurer's Report. .Financially, we are still running on the funds from our earlier Combined User's Group events. With preparation for mailing, postage, speaker fees or expenses, snacks, etc., we need about $2000 a year to run the group. John budgets about $ 430 a meeting for speakers. John asked if $25 a year is too much for dues. No one objected; however, Rosemary suggested having a company option so that the privilege of going could be passed around to different people in the company. That idea seemed to be popular. We will make the final decision on a proposal at the June 11 meeting and begin collecting at that time.

John brought copies of the latest IDUG Solutions Journal to the meeting. If you need IDUG information or coupons for the next IDUG meeting, call John at 614-249-3187. Also, be aware that if you present a paper to IDUG, you can get into the conference free.

Feature Presentation

Our Presentation was on DB2/MVS Version 5 (yes, there is no V4.2). The presentation was given by Phyllis Groezinger, who now works remotely for the Santa Teresa Lab where DB2 is produced. She will be representing the Lab in order to tie development closer to the user community. She is primarily responsible for any Data Sharing implementation assistance, but will be available for many of the questions and requests she has always done. The presentation covered V5 features and functions. We also got sidetracked into a long discussion on Web access and ODBC.

What's New from IBM

Basically, there was nothing in this special topic since we covered DB2/MVS V5 and the new DB2 Universal Data Base (new name for Common Server) pretty thoroughly.

Roundtable

Fumiko Mehl (OSU Hosp) asked if anyone had a way of doing read/write during a reorg prior to the V5 On-line Reorg. Mike Bruns (AEP) mentioned Platinum has an offering, but investigate whether it meets your needs.

Fumiko asked whether compression made a difference on reorg. Mike Bruns said it uses more CPU, but the elapsed time is significantly less. Tim Keen (O.M. Scott ) mentioned that they remove extra indexes prior to reorg. They have a lot of indexes since it is primarily a warehouse-type data base.

Jeff Frazier (Victoria's Secret Catalog) asked if simple tablespaces were going away. No one had heard this. Phyllis will verify.

Jose Gomez (Columbia Gas Distribution CO) asked whether anyone had problems with the Visual Explain on the Common Server. Phyllis thinks it is the owner of the explain tables, but she and Jose will investigate.

Tom Stenger (Ross Labs) asked if we had a guess at the price of the new Universal Data Base (all except for DB2/MVS) Phyllis will check.

Paul Schulz (Nationwide) asked whether anyone used Platinum DB Analzyer to reorg partitions. Mike Bruns and he discussed problems with the current stats and index altering in the process.

Fumiko Mehl asked about data placement on Ramac. Mike Bruns said let DFDSS do what it thinks is right.

Rich Olympio (O.M.Scott) asked when IMS V6 was available, since Phyllis mentioned that the direct use of IMS data bases without calling CICS was only with that version. Phyllis will check on the schedule.

(Thanks to Phyllis Groezinger - IBM - for taking minutes.)
