db2pd is a new lightweight problem determination and monitoring utility first shipped in DB2 Stinger (V8.2). It was ported from Informix where it was known as the OnStat utility. db2pd incurs no overhead in the database engine, and should become your monitoring tool of choice where possible. This presentation will show you how to use db2pd to monitior essential DBM and DB CFG parameters, including lock contention and problem determination. Essential db2pd options will be covered and comparisons made to snapshot monitoring. Recommendations will be provided in terms of replacing certain snapshot monitoring with db2pd.
About the Speaker - Phil Gunning, Gunning Technology Solutions
Phil is currently an internationally acclaimed consultant, author, and lecturer with Gunning Technology Solutions. He provides DB2 UDB consulting and knowledge transfer to companies around the world and has presented extensively on DB2. Phil has taught and designed DB2 college courses, where he was an early member of the DB2 Scholars program. Phil is the author of DB2 UDB V8 Handbook for Linux, UNIX, and Windows, IBM Press, and co-author of the IBM Redbook, DB2 UDB ESE High Performance Design for OLTP and BI. He also maintains the DB2ZONE which contains several years of tips and other related DB2 UDB for LUW information at http://www.gunningts.com/db2zone.htm. He has written articles for DB2 Magazine, DBAZINE, and the IDUG Solutions Journal. He has also published eBooks on DB2 UDB Performance, Monitoring, and Tuning. Phil has served as a technical reviewer for many DB2 IBM Press books. Phil is currently a member of the IDUG Solution Journal editorial board.
This presentation will cover the important DBM and DB configuration parameters, associated snapshot monitor elements and related performance metrics. Sort overflows, hash join loops, lock contention issues, agent settings, and tablespace configuration for performance will be highlighted. The latest changes in DB2 UDB V8.2.3 will be covered.
