DB2 V8 Implementing Materialized Query Tables (MQTs)

This session will cover the nuts and bolts of implementing Materialized Query Tables (MQTs) in a production data warehouse environment. The session will discuss the research, development and definition of the MQTs along with the system parameters and settings necessary for success. This session is written from the experiences I had while solving a client's data warehouse performance problems. The environment had hundreds of users submitting SQL through an OLAP front-end tool asking random questions against a large data warehouse of over 800 million rows (2TB). The session will detail how we saved the project and client over 750 million I/Os per day and turned query response time from hours to sub second with MQTs.

Real Time Statistics - Really Need Initialized

Real Time Statistics (RTS) is the first step toward autonomic database administration. Does that mean the end is near for today's DBA? I don't think so and neither will you after this presentation. The session will help you understand why you need to initialize your RTS tables; it will show you how to initialize these tables; and it will allow you to understand some of the many benefits RTS can provide to your organization.

About the Speaker  -  Chris Straub, Highmark Blue Cross/Blue Shield

Chris Straub has been a DB2 Database Administrator for the past 2 years, at Highmark Blue Cross/Blue Shield, primarily supporting mainframe applications. He is the Co-Leader of the Pittsburgh DB2 Users Group and will be presenting at IDUG in Denver this May. Prior to becoming a DB2 DBA, Chris worked as an IMS DBA and a Programmer Analyst. He has over 7 years experience in the IT field.
