What's New in DB2 Version 8 - William Backs

The latest announced version of DB2 for z/OS, version 8, is the largest single release in the history of DB2. It has numerous enhancements, not the least of which is a complete conversion to Unicode and to 64 bit addressing. Many of these features will have a significant impact on database administration. In the talk Mr. Backs will review many of these new features. He will close with a discussion of the migration path to the new release, the most complex migration ever.

About the Speaker  -  William Backs

Mr. Backs is a Senior Partner with Sobek Consulting, and has been employed in the data processing industry since 1976. For the past fifteen years he has specialized in relational database theory and design, especially DB2. Mr. Backs is a nationally recognized leader in the DB2 community. He has been working with DB2 since Release 1.2. While Director of Information Technology at a large textbook publisher, he was responsible for implementing the first transaction CICS system to utilize DB2 in the Midwest. IBM has recognized his leadership by making him one of their Gold Consultants. Mr. Backs helped found the International DB2 Users Group and was its first president. For years he was on the Board of Directors of the Midwest DB2 Users Group. In addition, he is a member of the faculty at Depaul University.

Tuning Group Buffer Pools and Using Only One Command - Bryce Krohn

This presentation discusses the mechanics of DB2’s for OS/390 data sharing group buffer pools, and the tuning opportunities available for them. For example, how does DB2 for OS/390 provide data integrity when two DB2 subsystems in a data sharing group are accessing a data set simultaneously? What happens when one system updates a page that the other system already has cached? What is cross-invalidation, and how does it work? How does the user know if the group buffer pool is large enough? The presentation will conclude with a discussion of the counters that are included in the output of the DISPLAY GROUPB group buffer pool, and how the values of those counters can be used to monitor and tune the group buffer pool.

About the Speaker  -  Bryce Krohn

Bryce Krohn has over eight years experience in developing and teaching DB2 for z/OS and OS/390 data sharing courses, having been a major contributor to the development of the IBM Learning Services data sharing curriculum during the last five years of his 34 year career with IBM. Bryce has taught data sharing courses internationally, including Australia, Belgium, France, England, Israel, Germany, and Saudi Arabia. He has presented at all the DB2 Technical Conferences. He participated in the development of the parallel sysplex operator certification test, and has given customer data sharing briefings in the Poughkeepsie briefing center.
