Tuning Access Paths: Finding the Best Index - Joe Burns

Proper index selection and usage can be the determining factor in the performance of SQL. This presentation will provide insight into a variety of common index access paths and their impact on response time. Straight forward examples will highlight the relationship between finding the best index and better performance. The optimizer is responsible for finding the best available index, which will then drive the development of the rest of the access path. When several indexes are available, the optimizer's choice becomes a key concern for evaluating SQL performance. During this presentation the criteria that the optimizer uses when choosing an index will be reviewed. Furthermore, useful techniques will be covered for influencing the optimizer's decision. These techniques are described by using examples which include modifications to SQL, the use of specialized Runstats, and DB2 Version 6 Hints.
